The Autobadge Collection
The Autobadge Collection is an accumulation of Australian and New Zealand car badges and is regarded as the most comprehensive collection of such badges in existence. The collection is the result of over 40 years of assembling together, where possible, all known varieties of Australian car badges.
The heart of the Autobadge Collection are samples of most known badges of the motoring associations from each state in Australia including obsolete clubs. This covers associations such as the RACA, NRMA, RACWA, RAA, RACV, RACQ, AANT and RACT.
Many of the badges are unique being the only, or one of the few samples known to exist. The majority of the images used in the series of badge books are from the Autobadge Collection. The collection also includes two large glass display cabinets of lapel badges, trophies, key rings and other paraphernalia associated with the motoring clubs in Australia.
For display the collection is divided into categories covering:
- State organisations
- New Zealand
- Motor sport
- Souvenir badges
- Rally & Trial badges
- Marque club badges
- Vintage/veteran club badges
- Aero/water sport club badge
- Non motor sport …football
- Military car badges
- Etc, etc,etc
If it is a car badge and it is Australian then it has a place in the Autobadge Collection and, as finances allow, the collection continues to grow. When my custodianship of the collection ceases the entire Autobadge Collection is bequeathed to an Australian Motor Museum for the enjoyment of motoring enthusiasts.
A quantity of motoring association’s signs and vehicle lights also form part of the collection together with a large amount of ephemera that includes libraries of the motoring clubs magazines. It is from this collection of papers that much of the research is gathered from for inclusion in the books.
The most common questions I am asked when visitors view the collection are:
How many badges are there?
Answer: I dunno! Never counted them (the truth)
What are they worth?
Answer: Dunno to scared to find out!
